El Albayzín is the traditional Moorish heart of Granada, across the river from the Alhambra palace on a steep bit of hillside. The streets are winding, the architecture Moorish and the culture a Spanish, Muslim hybrid. Spanish Muslims fled here from the Inquisition, their culture blending with that of the local Arabs. Lively El Albayzin is known for its restaurants serving North African traditional dishes, the church of San Nicolas, with its photo perfect views of the Alhambra, the church of San Salvador and its 13th Century houses, Arab baths and ruined mosques.
