This was the great seat of Egyptian power during the New Kingdom, the 500 years beginning in the 11th Century, and site of all the great pyramids and burial tombs for the royalty and nobles of this era. Re-discovered by archaeologists in the 18th Century, it remains a focus for ancient Egyptian studies and is one of the world’s most famous archaeological sites.
