This step pyramid and burial complex was built in the 27th Century BC as the tomb for Pharaoh Djoser-Netjerikhet by his Vizier Imhotep An expansive courtyard and other ceremonial and decorative structures were built at the same time as the wedding cake tiers of this early pyramid. Originally an impressive 62 metres high and covered in white limestone this is one of the earliest pyramids, and is especially interesting because the structures which surround it are built of stone but in the style of earlier constructions which would have been built of wood.
