It is speculated that people may have lived in the area around this harbour town as far back as 1400 BC, but the Ostia Antica that we know today formed sometime in the 4th century BC. Ancient buildings and artefacts have survived, and a number of museums in the area proudly display those rare findings. The Baths of Neptune, the Collegiate Temple, the Forum of the Corporations, and the town amphitheatre are the impressive highlights. This makes for a great day trip from Rome, and a useful and less crowded alternative for those unable to make the trip south to Pompeii.
