Fossils of some of our earliest known human ancestors, a Homo erectus called Java Man were discovered at a dig at Sangiran in 1937. The whole dig covers around 48 square kilometres and from the initial discovery until 1941 more fossils and bones have been unearthed, including large jaw and skull fragments of another human ancestor, Meganthropus.
Artefacts from Sangiran make up half of the world’s hominid fossils and are key to our understanding of human evolution. The site, which has been inhabited for the last one and a half million years is now World Heritage Listed.
