Great Zimbabwe

See more Archaeological Sites. See best of Zimbabwe

Great Zimbabwe is the name given to the stone ruins of an ancient African city, once the centre on the Munhumutapa Empire which ruled over Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

The ruins spread over a 500 square km area and were built on consistently throughout the 11th to 15th centuries, making them some of the oldest structures in Southern Africa.

Chinese pottery shards and Arabian beads found there suggests that Great Zimbabwe formed part of a trading network extending as far as China.

Archaeologists are currently studying the site so there is much more information to come about this great and ancient city and the cultures and people that thrived here.
