Landmark 19th-century building in downtown Reykjavik, converted by the architect-owner into 5 stylishly cosy apartments for 2-4 After 10 years in New York gaining a reputation – and a W hotels design award – as an architect, Agnar Agnarsson returned to Iceland to create this "luxury urban retreat". Four sleek-yet-cosy studio rooms and a stunning penthouse apartment are housed in a smart old building where even the traditional corrugated iron cladding contrives to look stylish. It's in the buzzing heart of downtown Rejkyavik, a block from the city's main shopping and party street, Laugavegur. Inside, contemporary Icelandic art (all of it for sale) sits alongside elementally cool furnishings and light-hearted design touches (sadly not for sale): custom-made granite headboards, polished stone floors, wood-panelled bathrooms, even a sound-sensitive coffee table. Snug sleeping alcoves, all of them double-bedded, keep it cosy, while huge plasma TVs, Bosé sound systems, gleaming kitchens and wireless internet make it extremely functional. He calls it "a living art space to spark the imagination and soothe the soul"; we'd call it a haven of cool for tourists and business travellers.
