Whether it's for the peace and quiet or because you want to know how to catch some dinner, fly fishing is apparently rather addictive and easier to learn than first appearances might suggest. Just as long as the thought of wearing waders and standing thigh deep in a briskly flowing river appeals, you're bound to do well. Thankfully, there are no worms involved – just sharp little hooks disguised as multi-coloured, appetising flies – so horror is kept to a minimum and once you're up an running, you can enjoy the scenery and look forward to your picnic.
Scotland is, of course, very high on the list for top fly fishing spots – both for salmon and trout. The 'Fishing in Scotland' school offers three- and six-day tailored courses, with expert, one-on-one tuition. They'll take you to places with exceptional reputations for excellent fishing (such as the River Tay, River Spey and River Tweed) to get you started, and will teach you how to choose a rod and line, how to select the right flies for the season to convince the fish they're real, and how to tie them. Different casting techniques will be revealed as well as methods of 'reading the river' to anticipate where the fish will be hiding – and once you've been through playing and catching one, you'll discover how to release it again unharmed.
Airport transfers, accommodation, dinners, picnic lunches and fishing equipment are all provided as part of the package, and instead of buying your own waders, you can hire a pair when you arrive.
