The principle doctrine of Outward Bound is that of experiential learning – education is incompetent without understanding through experience, a very wise philosophy long held by the Chinese. One of 47 schools operating internationally and with great proficiency, they apply this philosophy to self development, teamwork and durability. All of this in the stunning surroundings of South Island’s Marlborough Sands, the ‘Discovery’ course runs for 8 days at a time. In this time you will continually be taken out of your comfort zone mentally, emotionally and, of course, physically. This all results in a greater sense of responsibility, respect and confidence for oneself and others. Activities include canoeing, sailing, rock climbing, hiking, swimming, running and camping; all group-based from start to finish except the 36-hour solitary bush-time.
