I'm going to Venice in May and have been offered a great deal in Mestre. Does anyone know this area of Venice? Is it a good area to be located?
Question about Venice
Mestre is the first city next to Venice. It is not really one of the major tourist destinations in Italy but offers a convenient and cheap opportunity to visit Venice and its lagoon. There are many connections by the train and by the bus that provides a service throughout the night. For example I enjoyed my stay at the hotel Paris, a 2 star hotel just behind the Mestre train station and the bus stop of "Linea Notte".
Mestre offers cheap accommodations but you will spend time and money to reach Venice. So, if you plan to spend a lot of days there you can afford to lose some time moving to Venice; but if you plan to spend there just some days, I suggest you to choose an accommodation in the historic center of Venice near the main attractions. For example take a look to Hotel Ai Due Principi http://www.hotelaidueprincipi.com/ It's a couple steps from St. Mark's Square and in Mestre you cannot found any room with the same view of the canal.
