Gold Beach

Hi next summer I want to visit Gold Beach, Arromanche, as my Dad was one of the royal engineers to land there on D-day. Please can you tell me the Port that is nearest to the beach, ie Cherbourg, or caen, as I dont want to have too long a drive once I arrive, we will probably be staying for around 3 days.
