What is the best way to travel from Whitsundays to Sydney?

I am traveling with a group through Contiki to Australia's and have 5 days at the end of the trip. My group of 7 is traveling from Whitsundays to Sydney after the tour and want to hit a few more spots or even one more city before ending in Sydney. Any suggestions on where to go or how to travel back? We are an adventurous crew of 20 and 30 year olds with some time to kill...do you suggest hanging in whitsundays and flying straight to Sydney, or traveling the coast? And by what means of transportation???

I recommend Noosa for laid back living for a short break, before taking the train down to Sydney. Otherwise the Gold Coast is brasher but fun - you could stop over here en route.

Noosa isn't what it used to be...
