In Western Australia people tend to develop a generous understanding of personal space. This is vast frontier country, and great orange and ochre swathes of it are empty up to the smooth white beaches and the Indian Ocean, so the few (by square kilometre) inhabitants can afford to keep their distance, which also helps with the heat. Most of Western Australia's population lives in young, golden, leisure-oriented, Perth, while the rest of the state (approximately a third of Australia) is deserts pricked by rock formations, farming scrub, eucalypt forests and green granite mountain ranges known for deep gashed gorges. Rich from mining but still unpolished, towns are isolated and largely unvisited bar sparks of life provided by the dolphins of Monkey Mia, whale sharks of the Ningaloo Reef and Broome with it's history exotically tied to pearl diving.
