A High Baroque church to the right, a techno club to the left and an old lady in a fur coat in the middle – Vienna encapsulates a feeling of both old and new without jeopardizing either. Further down the street there may be a park, one which helps to make up fifty percent of the city’s land, or you may hear the notes of Brahms or Strauss seeping through the walls of one of the many symphony halls.

The architecture lining Vienna’s streets embodies the theme of the old coexisting with the new, a conglomeration of work from the Romanesque Ruprechtskirche, classicist, Art Nouveau, and modern periods. Vienna’s historic heart lies within the Hofburg, where the Habsburg rulers lived, yet just down the road there are cafes and bars which squirm with youth culture. An air of imperial longing floats above the heads of both the elderly and the young, allowing a modern city to sprout from the sturdy stems of the old city.

Stunning Buildings

What a great city, full of grand buildings, with a history way grander than most European cities. Highly recommend heading out to Grinzing to some of the 'Heuriger' - wine restuarants where they often make their own wine on the premises.

There's a place called Pension Nossek right across from St Stephens. See http://www.pension-nossek.at/ - run by two eccentric ladies, mother and daughter if I remember right
