People have been living in what is now the city of York since it became a Roman capital in 71AD. Built at the join of two rivers York was an important commercial centre which also attracted interest from the Vikings who moved in in the 7th Century. The ancient city walls enclose the city’s most interesting historic features (and best known tourist attractions) including the grand and Gothic York Minister and York Castle. York also boasts a National Railway Museum and University.
