Dundee was christened the City of Discovery in the 1980s when the ship Discovery, built in Dundee, and used by Captain Scott in his ill fated trip to Antartica, was returned home to the city. It's quite a fitting title from my perspective, as visiting the city recently has been a personal rediscovery for me. I was born in Dundee but only lived there until I was five years old and have to admit that during my early adulthood would refer to my city of birth as a bit of a dump. The city has been heavily dependent on manufacturing industries and was struggling to adapt to the new realities. However that's all changed now, the city feels vibrant and lively without having lost it's down to earth soul and humour. The city centre is looking great with bronze sculptures of Dennis the Menace and other comic book characters. The quayside has been redeveloped and has a shopping centre and restaurants.
