On a band of land between the encroaching snow topped Caucasus Mountains and the Black Sea this long narrow city with its OTT Stalin-era architecture stretches along the warm, sunny seas and beaches. Subtropical on the sea, with green parks and lush gardens, the mountains are close enough for the city to host the 2014 Winter Olympics.
