Slovenia's warm embrace is like a scene from a fairy tale. It may be small, but this land flourishes prettily amidst all its chateaux, grottos and chasms. This fable-like quality stems not only from an oak-filled rolling landscape, but also an unsettled history of belonging to numerous vast kingdoms, starting from the Roman Empire through to Yugoslavia in the nineties.
But Slovenia's assets are far from legend, with its champion facilities and world-class hospitality. Its rugged Alpine region is considered one of the best, and hosts major downhill skiing competitions. The mountains slowly descend into wooded, Karst-ridden plateaus, which shelter cavernous and colourful caves. Smack bang in the centre, Ljubljana is quite traditional. The cobbled alleys winding below the city's elevated castle tell a romantic story, amongst their blended Renaissance, Art Nouveau, and Baroque architecture. Whether you're looking to clamber up a medieval trail or skim snowy slopes, Slovenia resembles the stuff that dreams are made of.
