Singapore gets mocked for being a highly ordered, sterile city-state, but some visitors won’t miss the graffiti, litter, unreliable transportation and chaos of other large cities they have travelled to. Still, Singapore has recently tried to loosen up its image by cultivating an excellent contemporary arts scene and attempting to preserve some of the incredible temples and colonial buildings that remain amongst the new shiny sky scrapers now dominating the skyline.
The diversity of Singapore’s population more than makes up for any uniformity in its appearance; you’ll marvel at the range of options available in the hawker centres at meal time, with everything from Chinese, Indiana and Malaysian food - representing Singapore’s main ethnic groups- to Thai and Vietnamese. And after a good meal at bargain basement prices, take advantage of the state of the art facilities, and the money you’ve just saved, and head over to Orchard Road for some of the world’s best shopping in the city’s gleaming consumer paradise.
