Sicily is unlike any other part of Italy and unlike any other Mediterranean island: this island isn’t merely for sun tanning on the sea coast; visitors venture away from the surf to gaze into the mouth of the active Mt. Etna volcano and in the winter, skiers can even hit its slopes. The cities are also worth exploring, stunning skylines blend together the Greek temples and Roman cathedrals and amphitheatres representing pockets of Sicily’s long, complicated history.

As a result, Sicily is not so much Italian as it is a cultural representative of the convergence of the ruling powers that have occupied it. Greek, Roman and Arabic tradition have blended here to create a unique Mediterranean experience. Travellers can taste the different cultural influences in the local cuisine which combines Sicilian fresh seafood with not only the anticipated Italian flavours and pastas, but also with cous cous, a nod to its former African inhabitants.
