Sardinia’s white sandy coast makes the waters here look tropical, and its location closer to Africa than Italy makes for some nice weather as well, suggesting this might be the place for beach bums. Some of the coast has a coating of tourist development so if you want infrastructure there’s plenty of it, but the south western side still looks quite rural, as does the interior.
The local food and drink is heavy and strong, the landscape dotted with thousands of unusual stone fortresses and there are some picture perfect towns if you care to look beyond the resorts. Visit towards the autumn end of the season for the friendliest weather and least crowds.
