Pedalling through the hills and streets of Salzburg, the search for The Sound of Music sights is on – Nonnberg Nunnery to the right, Residenzplatz Square and Fountain, and then the famous pavilion where Liesl sings “I am 16 going on 17.” A morning cycle tour of the Sound of Music sights can be topped of with a visit to a local pub and a lunch of cold beer, Gulasch, and Germknödel for dessert. Enough Julie Andrews for one day, head to Schloss Mirabell and relax to the notes of Mozart drifting up through the balcony while listening to the chitter chatter of gossipy old women in the next row.
The warmth of Salzburg comes in part from the locals, who will gladly point tourists in the direction of the castle shown in the second half of The Sound of Music or suggest the best local café. Get away from the musical crowds and other tourists while resting along the Salzach and watch the sun quietly nestle itself below the skyline of the city.
