Touristy areas are not for me. That's why the off the beaten path island, Pitcairn, is a spectacular destination. Home to the descendants of nine families who were mutineers from a British ship in the late 1700s, Pitcairn is one of the most isolated places on earth, accessible only by boat through Bounty Bay. Approximately 50 people live on the island, and there are no visitor facilities. Tourists who are interested in visiting the island must make plans to stay with native families, as well as receive written permission from the New Zealand government.

One of four volcanic islands in the area, Pitcairn Island, the second largest, is the only one that is inhabited. Talks of building an airstrip and guest accommodations have been denied several times, although there is still a chance it could happen. Although if that did occur, Pitcairn would lose the individual personality that it now holds.
