Northern Territory, Australia

Crocodile Dundee, with his broad accent, brown leathery skin, 80's cowboy outfit and big knife is most people's first encounter with the Northern Territory, locally referred to as the 'Top End'. Surprisingly close to reality, the Northern Territory is best imagined as the wild west in an outback setting with additional helpings of danger and characters bent by isolation and the unsympathetic but stunning surroundings. People are eaten by crocodiles at the rate of one every few years; they also hunt water buffalo in helicopters. The last bit of Australia to be colonised by Europeans, the Northern Territory is the best place to learn about Aboriginal culture as well as a place of extreme natural beauty. The biologically diverse flood plains of Kakadu are fringed by the hazy escarpment in the north, in the middle is the rugged sun scorched bush of the Kimberly Ranges and at the bottom of the Top End is the red desert, Alice Springs and the rock.
