Explore Kathmandu by rickshaw: begin at Dunbar Square, where the old royal palace and temples surround you on all sides, then pick a driver, hop into the cart and away you go, pedalled into the city. Since the drivers know the way you’re free to gaze at the architectural masterpieces and the locals you pass by without needing a tourist map or a guide book. As you ride along the edge of the river the Pashupatinath Temple comes into focus, but since non-Hindus are not allowed in the temple, there’s no need to stop; just snap your pictures as the temple recedes into the background.

Next the driver pedals past the Tharlam Monastery, then right into the heart of the city to the Dharahara – a rather unimpressive nine storey high statue which offers a very impressive panoramic view of all of Kathmandu - pay the rickshaw driver well for his pedalling then climb the 113 stairs to the eighth floor balcony, ideal for taking pictures. Eat at one of the local restaurants close by and then head back up into the Dharahara to snap a few pictures as the sun sets over the city.
