In the past, Mozambique has been ravaged by debilitating war and natural disasters. But after many years, the country is healing from the devastation and re-establishing itself as a popular African getaway. Despite the hardships, Mozambique has retained most of its natural beauty and cultural charm - there are stunning sandy beaches, pristine waters for fishing and miles of mountainous trails for hiking. Venturing beyond the larger cities, you could find yourself bumping along the countryside on a safari, surrounded by impressive wildlife, from rare birds to majestic elephants. Visiting the country's remote villages will leave you brimming with the local charm and Mozambique Island has stately colonial architecture that has been dubbed a UNESCO World Heritage site. Don't let this country's tumultuous past fool you - Mozambique's beauty and allure are resilient.
Best time to go
The temperature doesn't change much throughout the year in Mozambique, so plan your vacation around the rainy season. Basically that means avoid its peak - February through April - when the roads become a wet, soggy mess. Visiting between May and November is your best bet ? rain is minimal and temperatures are cooler. If you're planning to travel during busy holidays like Christmas or Easter, make reservations well in advance because hotels fill up fast.
