Dating from colonial times, riverside port, Old Montreal was where the city of Montreal was born. Because it was originally a walled city it is easy to place a border around which area now constitutes Old Montreal, between Mcgill St., Saint Antoine St., Berri St., and the Saint Lawrence River. On the site of the very first buildings is an archaeological museum focused on the city and it’s growth and development. The oldest surviving buildings in Montreal and some of the oldest in north America, dating from the 17th Century, are found within these boarders including the City Hall, Bonsecours Market and the Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel, you can also see the foundations for the walls which originally fortified the city. Remnants of the cities French past is visible in some of the narrow, winding pathways, cobbled streets and European influenced 18th and 19th Century architecture.
