Monterey County is located on California’s Pacific Coast approximately 120 miles south of San Francisco. Situated in the protected Monterey Bay, the county is a major tourist destination thanks to its endless options for entertainment, exploration and relaxation.

Monterey incorporates its unique history into its modern appeal giving the county its own flair. Influences from early Spanish populations to success during the fishing era as a sardine cannery are a part of everyday life in Monterey and are intermingled with the area’s relaxed beauty and grace.

Thanks to its unique coastal location, Monterey is home to Monterey Bay Aquarium, the premiere aquarium in the United States. Visitors can explore the museum’s collection or go on their own adventures with guided and unguided scuba-diving and sea-kayaking trips. Sea life – like sea lions and otters – can be seen from the many coastal recreation paths or aboard one of the whale and wildlife boat tours.

Monterey is also home to Cannery Row – the street that gave John Steinbeck’s novel Cannery Row its name and flavourful characters – as well as Old Fisherman’s Wharf where visitors can see an active fishing port and taste plentiful fresh seafood.

Another Monterey attraction, 17-Mile Drive is considered one of the most beautiful scenic drives in the United States. It takes visitors through both coastal outlooks and majestic forests unique to the area alone. Part of California Highway 1, Monterey is also at the northern end of Big Sur, the winding highway that curves along some the country’s most outstanding coastal vistas.

Other attractions include Pebble Beach, home to Pebble Beach Golf Course, where some of the nations most prestigious golf tournaments take place. Just south of Pebble Beach, Carmel is home to historic missions, sandy beaches and fine dining and shopping options. Carmel welcomes guests with its unique charm, a combination of Hollywood glamour, San Francisco sophistication and European style.

Home of former sardine canning factories...

Home of former sardine canning factories, Monterey is another gem about an hour away from San Jose. Explore Cannery Row, visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium and be sure to visit nearby Pebble Beach for a glimpse at the world-famous golf course. If you don’t golf or want to avoid some hefty green fees, try dinner at one of my favorite Italian restaurants, Peppoli, inside The Inn at Spanish Bay.
