This chilly, dry and remote city has had numerous names throughout its history and was renamed Ulaanbaatar in 1924 when it became the capital of the Mongolian republic. For a long time in a state of disrepair because under Communist rule funds weren’t spent on repairs, the architecture is dull, there is rubble lining some of the streets and the transportation is dated - but the history is rich and colourful.

sleeping under a roof of goatskins and expriencing the inquisitiveness of these friendly and hospitable people was simply amazing. Not too fond of goatmilk to wash, but what an experience" The ice maiden tomb was our real purposes to visit, and to trace history back to the celtice priestess entombed ont he Steppes was the moment of a lifetime. My blond hair was embarrassing though.....
