Mauritius has long been thought of as a destination worth visiting. In his book “Following the Equator”, Mark Twain praised the natural beauty of the island, writing, “You gather the idea that Mauritius was made first and then heaven, and that heaven was copied after Mauritius.”
The island, created around a central extinct volcanic plateau has a tropical climate and an interesting diversity of plant and animal life. It also has the desirable palm fringed, soft sandy beaches of the best tropical islands.
Some of the island's regions are quite built up, and offer shopping and other cosmopolitan entertainment, however some of the more remote areas are still relatively untouched. The people are either descended from the Indian people, who initially settled here, or more recent immigrants from Africa, China, France and anywhere else they could afford to leave behind for this beautiful locale.
