A paradise coastal state and a haven four tourists and wildlife alike, Goa was only returned to India in 1961, following nearly five centuries of colonial rule by Portugal. An admirable display of European, Baroque architecture remains as a testament to this time, most notably the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa, or ‘Goa Velha’ which contains the remains of the body of Saint Francis Xavier. However, the numerous monumental churches such as this one are predated by a glorious Indian architectural and cultural heritage of the city, and even the basilica itself is said to have been built around the remains of an ancient Hindu temple to Shiva. Though many of the original examples of Indian architecture were destroyed, particularly the religious ones, some still stand, for example those at Sidhanath Mountain, or the Shri Gomanteshwar temple, which dates back to the 5th century.
The city itself was founded ten centuries later as Goa’s capital – a home for royalty and a busy port. It is now the perfect cultural centre for those looking for time out from Goa’s heavenly beaches and peaceful wildlife reserves.
