Trekking through the Langdale Valley in the Lake District, your backpack bobbing up and down and socks tugged up high around the ankle, you’re surrounded by mountains crawling along the horizon, each one climbing higher towards the sky than the last. The path graduates from a leisurely stroll to an uphill hike, with roots and rocks obscuring the way. Step over the trickling steam, around the dead tree, side step the fallen mile marker, under the overgrown brush, and through unavoidable cobwebs until finally the perfect fallen tree trunk makes an appearance, the ideal place to stop for a quick lunch, gulping down water and sandwiches, and then it’s back to the trail.
After a day of hiking, and a well-deserved nights rest in the campground or B&B, a change is in order – head to Wast Water for a morning of sailing and lounging on the lake followed by a visit to the Dove Cottage, the former home of romantic poet William Wordsworth. The Lake District is the muse of the Romantic era, and inspired not only Wordsworth in his love of the innocence of nature, but many other artists and artistic souls as well. Combine an appreciation of nature and history, the physical and the intellectual, the athletic and the relaxing, and all without travelling further than the Lake District.
