Travelling to Kerala is a move away from the modernized and busy cities of India towards a more relaxed atmosphere, where there’s a balance of exotic Indian culture and an ever-present colonial past creating a state where the familiar mingles with the unknown. Starting the day at a tea house where traditional spiced tea is served, enjoy a slow morning of small talk with the locals and some people watching—the way of life in Kerala moves at a slower pace than other areas in India.
Next, take a boat ride through the maze of rivers, canals, and marshes, and visit a few of the surrounding towns, most of which can be accessed by boat or canoe. Check out the outside architecture of some of the Hindu temples, where, unfortunately, non-Hindus are not allowed to enter, and when late afternoon rolls around stop by a wildlife reserve and pet an elephant’s trunk, returning to your starting point in the evening for a spicy meal of traditional food.
