A trading port all its life, the city's name is derived from the Old Javanese word "Jayakarta" which translates as "victorious deed", "complete act", or "complete victory". But while its name and history might seen a little defensive, this is one of the most welcoming capitals on earth. Busy, friendly and still rooted in a tradition of commerce.
