Manipur lies protected in a valley between unspoiled, forest-covered hills, home to rare orchids, slow lorises, clouded leopards, horned pheasants, dancing sangai deer and a number of other unique and endangered species.

Imphal, the capital, is situated directly in the centre of the state and bears a great cultural history. Several traditional dances, including the Ras Lila, were invented here. Basket-making and the weaving of fine fabrics are thriving traditional cottage industries, and the game of polo as we know it today was invented here as royal entertainment in the first half of the 19 th century, prior to British rule. Many years before, the martial art of Thang-Ta also developed here; it employs not only the skills of strength and sword and spear manipulation, but also those of self-control, breathing patterns and ritualistic movements, endowing Manipur’s ancient warriors with their reputations for being particularly fierce and brave.
