The largest country in South America spouts songs of the Copa Cabana and The Girl from Ipanema, but those lyrics barely scratch the surface of the true melody that is Brazil. When you combine the sounds of the sensual samba and the beats of the bahia axé with the tropical undertones of the rainforest jungle, you get a sound that is uniquely Brazil.

Brazil: three weeks Feb 2013 by Rich Groen

Brief summary of highlights:

• One week with friends in Guaruga, east of Sao Paulo, on the beach: great surf, miles of sand, friendly barraca owners, girls . . . Drive through Sao Paulo – lasting impressions of gutsy motorcyclists hugging “their” lane, the white line.

• Reading: The Brazilian Table by Yara and Richard Roberts – recipes and cultural notes; Walking the Amazon by Ed Stafford; River of Doubt by Candice Millard ; The Brazil Reader edited by Levine and Crocitti.

• Carnival in Rio de Janeiro: wearing “Moon and Stars – Emerging Revelry” fantasy through the Sambadrome. Using the tourist version of dancing, something like the samba-shuffle. Cooling off with party-time dancers shedding their costumes while walking home. Street corner crowds in samba mood.

• Rio to Sao Paulo via TAM Air to relax and recuperate for a few days, then back to Rio after the carnival clean-up.

• Copacabana beach, downtown walking, Sugarloaf, and Cristo Redentor. Some speedy bus rides in Rio. TAM Air to Manaus, Hotel Tropical.

• Amazon River – 6 days to see birds, sloths; fish for piranha, walk the jungle, swim, eat fantastic local food, meet adventurous foreigners , learn about the local culture (including their staple food: manioc) on the Clipper Cruise. Wander through the city of Manaus to visit Teatro Amazonas, food stands, schools, shipyard, cathedral.

Never had an inferior caipirinha or batida anywhere. Tudo bem and thumbs up to the bartenders.

** More on the Amazon trip in a later post to this blog**

Yes, we will return. The Amazon river trip needed five months advance booking and the parade with ILHA Do Governador Carnival date and time were definite [1 a.m. February 11], so we were locked in to a stipulated time frame. Next time we will explore more of Rio and other cities which have their own customs.

Multi-ethnic Brazilian culture has great variety because of indigenous people who were influenced by missionaries, the slave trade between Portugal and Africa via Brazil, and Napoleon’s fear-inducing influence in Europe. Well after early Portuguese colonization, immigration to Brazil included many foreign groups including the largest population of Japanese outside of Japan. Restaurants attest to a worldwide palate.
