Tasmania isn't quite in step with the rest of Australia. Strongly tied to it's colonial history, this, and it's pristine wildernesses are both the main attractions and political stand offs Tasmania is known for. With so much untouched wilderness to protect, from the Franklin River to Cradle Mountain, Freycinet National Park and Wineglass Bay, Tasmania has been one of the premier internationally recognised environmental battlegrounds. Island isolation has protected Tasmania's diverse ecology so some of the world's rarest plants and animals, including the Tasmanian Devil, can be met while walking or trekking it's high, grey green peaks.
