Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad is sometimes also called Karnavati, for the town that once stood on the same site, founded in 1411 as the capital of Gujarat. Despite its now largely industrial and commercial identity, it has a cultural heart and a fascinating history evident in a number of impressive archaeological sites, some dating back as far as the 11th century, and several museums which explore the city's long-thriving textile industry and its rich artistic and architectural heritage.

A dense mixture of Hindu and Islamic design and architecture blend with the newer buildings, just as the traditional industries of tie-dyeing, mojri-making and embroidery sit comfortably and colourfully alongside the modern ones.

Among the best sites to see when you're not watching one of the international cricket matches at the Sardar Patel Stadium are Mahatma Gandhi's ashram on the riverbank, the white marble Hatheesing Jainist temple and the Sarkhej Roja ancient religious complex on the outskirts of the city.

If you can time your visit to coincide with the January festival of Kites, then you'll be in for a surreal and beautiful treat.
